The population of America is becoming more aware of the importance of good nutrition. Ironically the people are becoming increasingly less healthy. In the 1960's the nation ate healthier but knew less about nutrition. The foods that the teenagers consume today contributes to the increasing weight and decreasing health of the nation. Many outside factors determine the eating habits of teenagers today.

When the baby boomer generation grew up a majority of the homes had mothers who worked in the home. The mother usually made sure that the meal prepared for dinner was balanced and healthy. So on the way to work they will buy dinner at a fast food restaurant. Places such as McDonalds's, Burger King, and Taco Bell have begun to appear on every street corner. Fast food restaurants made an appearance in America in the 1960's. They have not been around for very long and already the effects are destroying the health of the people in America. This is because people go to what to tastes good and these foods taste good to the kids. When their parents grew up a trip to grandmas for Sunday dinner was a treat and a variety from the meals at home. Today the treat is going out to a fast food restaurant. These foods are usually inexpensive, prepared for the person, and they taste good. The downside to these places is that their food is greasy and high in fat. Both of these are contributors to high blood pressure and high frequency of heart attacks among the American population.

College age students face different problems than the teens in high school. When students live in dormitories at a university or college, they eat on a meal plan. They usually do not have money of their own to spend on food at restaurants so the cafeteria regulates what food they eat. The cafeterias serve a lot of foods such as hamburgers or other meats with sauces and a lot of potatoes. These foods are very high in starch and cause of weight gain.

Teenagers are growing socially and physically and the decisions they make throughout these years influence their current and future health (Marlow). The decision to feast at fast food restaurants is an unhealthy preference which leads to a mixture of health problems. Teenagers desire instant gratification and quickly become overfed and under nourished at fast food restaurants. (Ram). “It’s extremely difficult to eat in a healthy way at a fast-food restaurant. Obese teenagers have an 80% chance of becoming an obese adults (Keenan-Green). Additionally, a fast food meal contains more calories than a healthy meal of the same quantity which swiftly add on pounds. The human body was designed to have a diet of low density high energy foods not high calorie energy dense foods, such as fast foods (Ram). recommended intake, but it does not provide any fiber or essential fatty acids, thus making it not very healthy (Ram). Another study actually found that some meals at a fast food restaurant had enough calories to satisfy a person’s daily caloric intake (Cornforth). Teenagers who make a regular diet of fast foods are prone to skin problems, mood swings, hormonal imbalances, blood sugar inconsistencies, obesity, and heart disease. The risk of osteoporosis may increase with increased soda consumption (Ram). Moreover, fast foods are unhealthy as they deplete the body of minerals and vitamins; they do not provide any fiber or essential fatty acids (Ram). Furthermore, fast foods such as sausage, French fries, fried chicken and sauces are unhealthy for the reason that they are full of a neurotoxic monosodium glutamate (MSG) which is used as a preservative and to enhance flavor. MSG has numerous side effects akin to headaches, chest pain, sweating, heart palpitations, nausea and weakness; some claim it interferes with thinking clearly (Martinez).
